Happy Halloween!

I love this photo and thought it appropriate on this 'Hollows Eve.'  On one of my afternoon walks the girls, I strode past an old, beat up VW Rabbit. The passenger side window was gone and a spider had made it the place for her web. We returned to the 'spider car' several weeks later with camera in hand.

A big happy birthday shout out to my wonderful sister Candace. I love you so much! I looked up a little "Halloween" history on the web. Here is some that I found for those interested:

"Around 2,000 years ago, the Celts, who lived in what is now the United Kingdom, Ireland, and northern France, had a festival commemorating the end of the year. Their New Year was November 1, and this festival was called Samhain, pronounced sow-en. The end of their year signaled the end of summer, the end of the harvest season, and the beginning of a long, hard winter that often caused many deaths of animals and people. Weaker livestock were often killed and eaten during this holiday, since most likely, they would not survive the winter anyway. Because of this, and the cruel winter to come, this time of year signified death to the Pagan Celtics. They believed the night before the New Year, that the wall between the living and the dead was open, allowing spirits of the dead, both good and bad, to mingle among the living. Some of these spirits were thought to possess living people, cause trouble, ruin crops, or to search for passage to the afterlife." (http://www.halloween-history.org/)

When the Roman Catholics came along, they were not too happy such Pagan traditions; so they declared November 1, to be All Saints Day, "also known as All Hallows, or All Hallowmas (Hallowmas is Old English for All Saints Day)". Therefore October 31st was 'Hallows Eve' which gave way to the term Halloween. They were hoping to discourage the Pagan tradition by placing a Christian holiday so close to it. Didn't work too well I'd say.  I am grateful to my parents who did not read too far into such things as Halloween.  I enjoyed it as a kid and want my children to do the same.  I don't feel any less Christian because of it.  I do enjoy the history and learning about other cultures and beliefs.

Feeding Elsie

This is the first time Reagan has solo held the baby.  Now that Elsie is a little bigger, I can prop her more safely.  Reagan loved feeding her baby sister!  She is crazy about her, but still has a hard time with the 'be gentle' concept.  I always knew Katya was an unusual kid.....she was SUPER gentle with baby Reagan.  Katya is such a little mommy and little girlie girl.  Reagan is our rough and tumble tomboy.  I wonder what our sweet Elsie will be like......

Favorite time of year

Craig and I both really love this time of year. We don't mind saying goodbye to the hot days of summer, even though we will eventually tire of cold, short days ahead. Our neighborhood quiets down, the leaves changing colors, brisk mornings, snuggling up by the fireplace...such good things! We have been enjoying some beautiful Fall weather here in Portland. The girls and I have been getting out on lots of afternoon walks. Katya on her balance bike (she cruises right along!), Reagan on my back and Elsie in the stroller.  When Craig is home he and Levi join us for complete family fun:-)  More pictures to come....

Busy, busy

Colds and bad nights of sleep have kept me from blogging much.  I have been meaning to post pictures (pumpkin patch, afternoon walks, sisters), I will get to it eventually I suppose.  In the mean time, enjoy the fun new header photo of the girls!  We had a great time seeing my sister and our beautiful necies when they were in town.  One of my favorite things was 'sister night' with Candace, Angie and JoAnne.  We are looking forward to a fun filled Halloween weekend.  Love to all, Brenda

Reagan in piggy tails

Reagan has been letting me put her hair in pig tails lately.  She looks so adorable!  They don't stay in very long but they sure are cute while they last.  Reagan and I are enjoying our mornings together while Katy's at school and Els'ers is napping.  She is requiring my full attention when it is just the two of us...it reminds me how much the two elder girls really entertain each other. Here are some cute pictures of our middle one.

Flu and cold season begins...

I took Els to the doctors this morning after being up all night with her. Just a cold, no secondary infection. They weighed her of course, and she is 15lbs 13 oz (3 months old). Holy huge baby! But her dad has her beat...he was 15lbs 13ozs at 2 months according to his baby book. She is actually longer than he was at this point. I think she will be tall like daddy! I feel a little sensitive to the fact that she is so big. People do comment, though no one has been rude...yet.

Reagan got sick first and gave it to the other girls. No fevers, just colds. It was a very hard night, I got about 3hrs of very broken sleep. I had to wake Craig up to help at one point. It gave us flash backs to her colicky days as we paced the floor with her at 2am. I am grateful for a wonderful husband who always puts his family before his job. He got up at 6 with the kids and I got another couple of hours sleep. Then he stayed home with the older girls while I ran Elsie to the Pediatricians. He was able to get into work by 11 and stay the rest of the day.

Elsie is sleeping, finally, her crib.  Please pray for quick recoveries so we can visit with the Smiths next week and not get them sick!!!

Kid updates

Elsie is doing great. She is starting to suck her thumb which I love. She still takes the binky after her bottle, just before bed, but it doesn't stay in for long. She goes down great, very little fussing or crying. Bedtime is around 6pm, up at 6:30am and waking once or twice. She takes 3-4 naps during the day and is up for about 1.5 hours in between naps. She really loves books and still does well at tummy time. She has not rolled over in quite some time. Life is very, very different here now that we are post-colic! Thanks for all the prayers.

Katya is very fun these days but can also throw some impressive tantrums. She is definitely trying at times. She is still crazy about art projects and playing with her sister. They have such a great time together. Her and Reagan are both very into Elsie, so much so that I have to watch them very closely around her. They are always getting in her face, it kind of drives me nuts. School is still going great for Katya.

Reagan is such a big girl! Along with that comes more time outs, but overall she is still such an easy kid. There is no reasoning with her when she doesn't get her way though; but then reasoning with a two year old is for the most part a lost cause. She is doing great with potty training but we have had some set backs. We went to OMSI today in underwear and she did awesome. She peed 4 times while we were there and had no accidents. The Science Playground is great because they have family bathrooms with a big toilet and a little one. They also have two sinks, one very short one for kids. It sure helps.
